There are 34 researchers in the Institute of South East Asian Studies and the Institute of South Asia Studies. Among them, there are 13 professors,9 associate professors , The main study fields are about economy, politics, foreign relationships, regional and sub- regional cooperation, traditional and modern cultures of South East and South Asian countries. Also the economic and technological cooperation between Yunnan and these countries are the key researches. Yunnan is neighboured by many Southeast and South Asia. The borderline is as long as 4,000 km. Therefore our institute can take the geographical advantage to further study international issues of the mentioned nations. The achievements and conclusions of our research are directly used in national foreign policy-making. Since1980s, we have gained extraordinary progresses in historical, cultural, economic and social study of Southeast Asia. And this has great importance in opening policy-making of Yunnan. province. Besides, we have had made a new breakthrough in the study of Nanzhao Nationality's origin and Thai people's origin, which is highly praised by experts of Thailand. Since 1990s, according to the opening policy of Yunnan province, our institute has kept further expanding other study fields so that study of South Asia was established. This had greatly deepened the political, economic, social, cultural and international relationships of Southeast and .South Asia. Studies like GMS Cooperation and Development as well as Cooperation Projects of China, India, Myanmar and Bangeladesh have always been the unsurpassed place in China.
On 28th November 2004, President of Yunnan Academy of Social Science Mr. Na Qi held a meeting with delegation of Vietnamese Academy of Social Science who were invited for "Economic and Trade Exchange Forum of Border Areas between China and Vietnam in 2005" hosted by the Institute of South East Asia Studies.
